Explore people management: start with clear team responsibilities
Discover how a simple responsibility map can help you explore Human Resource Management and teamwork at NIH College.

Good hospitality depends on people knowing how their work fits together. A welcoming service can lose momentum when two colleagues assume the other person has completed a task. If you enjoy organising people, explaining expectations and helping a team work well, people management may be a study direction to explore. At Nairobi Institute of Hospitality, we encourage you to connect your interests with practical questions about teamwork.
Start with responsibilities rather than job titles. For a learning exercise, imagine a small café team preparing for a busy afternoon. List the work that needs attention: welcoming guests, checking supplies, preparing the service area and communicating requests. This is an imagined scenario for exploring management thinking, not a report about a real NIH business or event.
Give each task a clear owner. Write down who would carry it out, who could provide support and who would confirm that it is ready. Avoid assigning the same responsibility vaguely to “everyone”. Shared effort works better when each person understands their own contribution and knows where to ask for help.
Next, consider the information each person needs. Someone checking supplies needs to know what is required and how to report a shortage. Someone welcoming guests needs accurate information about the service available. A manager should ask whether instructions are clear, resources are suitable and the workload is realistic before assuming a person simply needs to work faster.
Build a brief handover into your plan. Use four headings: task, current status, next action and responsible person. Separate a confirmed fact from something that still needs checking. For example, “the request has been received” is different from “the request has been completed”. Clear distinctions help the next colleague understand what remains to be done.
Review the plan from the team’s perspective. Does one person carry too many tasks at the same time? Is a less experienced colleague given enough guidance? Could someone raise a concern without being dismissed? Ask a partner to explain their responsibilities back to you, then improve any instruction that sounds ambiguous. The aim is to practise fair, organised thinking and clear communication.
Our Human Resource Management certificate and diploma are among the business study options you can discuss with NIH admissions. Ask for the current course outline, entry requirements, duration, fees and learning arrangements. Explain whether you are beginning your studies or seeking to strengthen the way you support a team. Your questions can help us guide you towards an informed choice.
