Prepare your bartending workstation with purpose
A practical introduction to organised preparation, essential tools and responsible beverage service.

A well-prepared workstation helps a hospitality professional focus on the guest and the quality of service. Before the first drink is made, there are tools to check, surfaces to organise and steps to understand. At Nairobi Institute of Hospitality, we encourage aspiring beverage professionals to approach preparation as a skill they can practise deliberately.
Start by learning what each tool does. A jigger helps measure ingredients; a shaker combines and chills suitable drinks; a strainer helps control what enters the glass. A bar spoon supports stirring, while a clean cloth helps keep the work area presentable. Different workplaces may use different equipment, so ask an instructor or supervisor about the correct method and follow their guidance.
Give every item a sensible place. Keep frequently used tools within comfortable reach, organise ingredients so labels can be read, and leave enough clear space to work safely. Check that glassware is clean and intact. Separate items that need washing from those ready for service, and keep the station tidy as you work. An organised setup makes it easier to notice when something needs attention.
Practise a simple preparation routine. Before a simulated service, list the tools and ingredients required for one non-alcoholic drink. Arrange them, check the recipe and measure water into a clean glass. Afterwards, return equipment to its place and review your process: what was easy to reach, what caused a delay, and what would you change next time? Focus on accuracy and cleanliness before speed.
Good service also requires judgement. Follow food safety and workplace hygiene procedures, use equipment as instructed, and respect local laws and workplace policies on alcohol service. If you are unsure about a guest request or a procedure, ask a qualified colleague instead of guessing. Professionalism includes knowing when to seek guidance.
Our Bartending & Mixology training is one option for people interested in beverage preparation and presentation. If you are considering this pathway, ask our admissions team for the current course outline, practical learning arrangements, duration, entry requirements and fees. You can also ask which equipment is included and what you should bring to class.
